Situation Analysis: Illiteracy and lack of SRH information are the key issues affecting Pakistani youth, who comprise approximately 32.3% of the total population. The environment factors especially in slum areas intensify these problems and lead to frustration driving them to crime, extreme forms of behaviour and use of drugs. Concerted pro-active efforts will be required in the fields if knowledge, information and skills to empower them as well as provide them with youth friendly SRH services.

Key Challenges:

1. High levels of unemployment, illiteracy and socio-cultural pressures leading to disempowerment and inability to make informed choices on major issues affecting their daily life.

2. STIs/HIV/AIDS is an emerging threat for young people.

3. Absence of a coherent youth policy at the national level reflecting the needs, desires and aspirations of young people.

Strategic Direction: FPAP will work towards empowering young people in Pakistan by building their capacity and skills to access SRH services in operational areas of FPAP.

Goal: All Adolescents and young people are aware of and are empowered to make informed choices and decisions regarding their SRHR, and are able to act on them.

Objectives:

  • To advocate for the operationalisation of a National Youth Policy to address the SRHR needs of young people at the provincial and district level in FPAP areas of operation.
  • To increase access to comprehensive youth friendly and gender sensitive reproductive health information, education and services.

Activities to Achieve Objective 1:

  • Review youth specific SRH programmes, their status of implementation and identify gaps.
  • Develop and enhance capacity of FPAP staff and Govt.Programme implementation in BCC.
  • Hold orientation meetings the political/opinion leaders at national, provincial and grassroots level on youth related issues.
  • Develop capacity of local stakeholders to increase focus on SRH at community level.
  • Collaborate with CSOs for advocating young people’s concerns and participation in decision making.
  • Evaluate and document progress in respect of implementation of National Youth Policy.
  • Document and disseminate lessons learnt.

Activities to Achieve Objective 2:

  • Collect baseline data to assess KAPB’s of young people towards SRHR.
  • Identify factors affecting youth access to SRH information and education and services.
  • Build the technical and managerial capacity of staff and volunteers to address the RH needs of young people including BCC.
  • Review existing RH related material and develop and disseminate appropriate and accessible RH related information material for young people.
  • Develop and undertake adolescent and gender specific BCC activities.
  • Identify and conduct orientation sessions with key local gate-keepers e.g., community and religious leaders and NGOs in the need for youth friendly services
  • Maintain and strengthen facilities for peer counseling.
  • Design and implement activities to promote the economic empowerment of young people.
  • Mobilise additional resources for adolescent programme.
  • Conduct end-line survey to measure increase in access of SRH services.
