Strategic Direction: The strategic direction of SHE will focus on gathering abortion related data to highlight the impact of unsafe abortion and sensitisation of policy makers and key community level stakeholders on abortion related issues.

Objectives:

  • To raise awareness of communities about the public health concern and impact of unsafe abortion
  • To provide support for those seeking abortion services for suspected thalassaemia majors and
  • To increase the commitment among service providers for post septic-abortion related services.

Activities to Achieve Objective 1: To raise awareness of communities about the public health concern and impact of unsafe abortion.

  • Advocate inclusion of cases of rape and incest under the existing legalised abortion provisions.
  • Decision makers to be supportive of liberalising rape and abuse cases.
  • At least one policy guideline developed and implemented for decision makers.
  • Reduction in the number of clients experiencing post abortion trauma.

Outcome Indicators  

  • Reduction in the number of deaths arising from abortion.

Activities to achieve Objective 2: To increase the commitment among service providers for post septic-abortion related services.

  • Organise orientation training for service providers
  • Conduct a study on the impact of unsafe abortion
  • Systemise recording of reported cases of abortions and related issues
  • Review and revise existing guidelines and protocols on post septic-abortion related issues
  • Provide genetic counseling services for couples seeking PND.
  • Provide support for those seeking 
  • PND service from institutions outside the country. 
  • Establish PND facilities at SHE Laboratory 
  • Organise PND services in partnership with local and foreign institutions

Outcome Indicators:

  • Increased number of service providers committed to giving guidance on abortion related matters 
  • Enhanced capacity of service providers in identifying and dealing with matters relating to abortion 
  • Strengthened rapport with carrier couples planning to have children. 
  • Reduced the unmet need of carrier couples seeking PND and support for abortion.
  • Strengthened capacity of laboratory personnel in providing counseling for carrier-couple seeking PND. 
  • Established services at SHE laboratory for PND and related procedures.
