Interaction of
violence against women and HIV: GWH prepared several briefs highlighting the intersections of
violence against women and HIV and AIDS for the 2004 campaigns and World AIDS Day.
Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) (http://www.who.int/svri and http://www.svri.org). This initiative is designed to increase information about, awareness of, and capacity to address sexual violence around the globe, and particularly in the developing world. The Initiative's Secretariat is currently based at WHO. SVRI is an initiative of the Global Forum for Health Research, aims to promote research on sexual violence and generate empirical data to ensure sexual violence is recognised as a legitimate public health problem. Broken Bodies, Broken Dreams: This is a new publication from the UN's Integrated Regional Information Network. The book focuses on the wide forms of violence experienced by countless numbers of girls and women worldwide through text, photographs and personal accounts, campaign. Seizing the Moment: An Advocacy Kit for GBV Policy Change: This is an excellent advocacy toolkit developed by USAID to help increase resources for GBV programmes. The kit includes a power point presentation that can be modified for particular countries, a companion guide and an annotated bibliography. Gender Training Wiki: The Gender Training Wiki is a tool created by the UN International Research and Training Insttute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) to communicate gender training related information. ICRW's HIV/AIDS Stigma and Violence Reduction Intervention Manual: The International Centre for Research on Women (ICRW) has developed a manual based on the findings from the Stigma and Violence Reduction Intervention Project. ICRW's Property Ownership and Inheritance Rights of Women for Social Protection - the South Asia Experience: This is a synthesis report of three studies conducted in India and Sri Lanka which highlights that women are exceptionally economically vulerable when caught up in situations of domestic violence. A key finding of the report is that women's ownership of property serves as an important protective factor against domestic violence. Sex work, violence and HIV: A guide for programmes with sex workers: Produced by AIDS Alliance, this guide provides examples from real programmes that illustrate ways in which HIV and AIDS projects can help reduce the incidence of violence against sex workers and provide support to those who experience violence. Human Rights Watch has released three reports on violence against girls based on its investigations in 15 countries. These reports highlight the threats to girls' safety, including physical and sexual violence in their schools, places of work, and in detention facilities. The report can be downloaded from:
Ending Violence against Women: A Programme for Prevention, Protection and Care: UNFPA has released a new handbook for practitioners in the field of ending violence against women. Miscellaneous: The film "Gender Bender" tells the story of women working in non-traditional jobs - bulldozer drivers, barbers, priests and houseboad drivers, across India. The 30 minute documentary film, directed by Poojita Chowdhury and funded by UNFPA and UNIFEM, illustrate examples of employment that challenge gender stereotypes and the positive impact on the lives of women.
